Aluminium smelting is the process of extracting aluminium from smelter grade alumina by electrolysis. This is called the Hall-Héroult process. The molten aluminium (also called primary aluminium) is then cast into ingots to cylindrical extrusion billets, rectangular rolling slabs or wire bar ingots.
